10 Layering Jackets to Build a Fall Wardrobe

Please understand that Autumn is absolutely my favorite time of year, especially in terms of fashion and this is why I will not let this topic go! I was driving to work the other day and noticed the leaves are beginning to turn vibrant shades of crimson and copper and I immediately busted out all my layering jackets. Last week’s post addressed the biggest Fall trend — the plaid blazer. This week I wanted to share a couple of more casual, transitional coats you need to build up a great fall wardrobe!

Slight Chill

Ultimately, these coats are lighter-weight, which makes them perfect for layering. The jacket I am wearing in these photos is a men’s track jacket I found at Buffalo Exchange in Manhattan. The red stripe and the graphic on the back really caught my eye, even though I had no idea what Drakkar Noir is – haha! A quick Google search indicated that it is a men’s fragrance by the brand Guy Laroche. When it comes to outerwear, I always think bigger is better, which is why I was totally digging this oversized fit. Although I am wearing it with a crop top here, you can easily throw on a long-sleeve or a sweater underneath for chillier days.

Getting Colder

Naturally, if we are discussing layering jackets, I obviously need to pay homage to the denim jacket. This is seriously one of my go-tos when it comes to layering in autumn! You cannot get more versatile and classic than a staple denim coat. Again, I think oversized is the best way to go for a casual, relaxed vibe. However, you can switch it up and opt for a different cut and unexpected color like this cropped mustard denim jacket I thrifted. I actually just wore this out this past weekend in NYC!

Winter is Coming

This last category is for a few weeks from now, when Autumn is dissipating (sadly) and when winter is indeed coming. This means, we need to opt for something a bit heavier than a standard track or denim coat. Last season, one of my favorite layering jackets was this tan, suede coat with faux-fur trim. The neutral color made it so easy to pair with any outfit and the details on the jacket just made everything pop and standout.

I have said it before, but I’ll say it again! Jackets are something I personally horde because 1) I am always cold 2) It’s a great way to add some character and style to any outfit. Layering season is upon us ladies! Let’s take advantage, shall we?

Fall 2017’s Biggest Trend: Plaid Blazer

The first official day of Fall 2017 is not until next week, however, I feel as if everyone is already in a autumnal state of mind. Thus, I wanted to address one of the biggest emerging fall fashion trends I have noticed  – the plaid blazer. This classic silhouette and glen plaid pattern is very reminiscent of timeless European styles and is definitely making a comeback this season. This past NYFW, I saw big names like Chriselle Lim, Aimee Song and Eva Chen rocking a similar style outerwear.

How to Style:

The week before heading to New York Fashion Week, I happened to stumble upon this glen plaid blazer at Goodwill and it miraculously fit me perfectly. It was a coveted piece and I knew it would be the perfect thing to wear to New York because it’s such a fall trend right now. Although a blazer is often associated with more formal occasions, I knew I wanted to dress it down, so I opted for this plain white crew neck tee from DSTLD (use the code ‘enclothedcognition’ for 10% off) and these grey, distressed boyfriend jeans from Hollister (similar). As far as accessories, my backpack and belt were thrifted years ago and the boots were from H&M (similar).

One of my favorite things to do when it comes to styling is adding some juxtaposition. I love this outfit because the structured glen pattern blazer pairs so unexpectedly well with the loose boyfriend denim and cropped tee. This combination is a great fall outfit to wear when you want to look effortlessly put-together.

Also, props to Dennis for taking these amazing photos. I met up with him before the Mochi NYFW presentation and it was such a pleasure working with him. If you are into street style, definitely check out his work. He has really captured some beautiful people and outfits!

Benefits of Shooting with a Professional Photographer

Long time no see! Well, if you have not noticed already, I have managed to successfully migrate Enclothed Cognition from Blogger to WordPress.org. I have been wanting to make the jump for quite some time now, but to be honest, the prospect of switching platforms seemed exhausting and challenging to me. Nonetheless, I finally put aside a full day to make the transition from blog to self-hosting. I decided to go with the webhosting company, Siteground, because the reviews were really good and to be honest, they were running a decent Labor Day Weekend Sale (LOL). However, this is a topic for a different day..

A couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure of shooting with Sophie in Philadelphia and these photos are the result! To be honest, I was a little nervous going because I do not have too much experience shooting with a professional photographer. If you did not know, the majority of my blog photos are shot by me with my trusty self-timer and tripod. However, there is definitely a lot of merit in shooting with another person!

From this shoot, I learned the benefits of shooting with a photographer. I realize this might be common sense to some of you, but prior to this, I never put much thought into it because I liked being a one-woman show. Yet, shooting with Sophie was a lot of fun! I got to shoot in a location I normally would not be comfortable lugging my tripod to. Plus, nothing beats the crispness and the unique shots you can get when having an actual person behind the camera.

Building a relationship with a photographer can also be a really valuable partnership. For instance, I was able to get high-quality images to utilize on my blog and social media outlets and Sophie is able to gain more exposure for her work. I honestly think one of the setbacks is not working solely on your own time and at your own pace. You do need to count on the photographer to send you the shots in a reasonable timeframe.

That being said, I am definitely going to be more open to meeting up with any willing photographers who want to work together. If you are based in Philly, holla at me! I am also going to New York tomorrow to attend one NYFW presentation and I’ll also be meeting up with another professional photographer. I can’t wait to share with you what I will be wearing! Be sure to follow me on Instagram so you can keep up with my mini Fashion Week adventure!

Haul: Casual Summer Tops

Good morning, babes! Today I have a quick haul of some easy, breezy summer shirts I have collected over the past 2 weeks or so. I wanted to share these because I thought they are some great summer basics to have this season.

Striped Open Back Crop Top

I am obsessed with any sort of crop top. I am really short, but I feel like a crop top gives the illusion of a longer torso and therefore adds a bit of “height”. This particular one caught my eye because of the classic black and white striped pattern and also the unique open back. I can just picture myself wearing this with high-waisted denim shorts on vacation.

Goodwill

I found this little number at the thrift store. I know it’s just a simple tee, but it is in a gorgeous pale yellow in a light, breathable fabric. Plus, the brand is Theory so I knew the quality of this shirt would be nice and long-lasting, even for a thrifted fine.

Tie Dye Print T-Shirt

Contrary to the last shirt, this tee is a lot more fun because of the tie dye print. It has been a long time since I have rocked anything tie dye and I am so glad I can bring it back with this top. It’s fairly oversized and perfect for relaxed looks. Not to mention, it’s so freaking soft!!

Goodwill

Lastly, I have this mint green crewneck top that I also found at Goodwill during the 50% sale, so it ended up being $2. Can’t beat that. I love this pastel color and thought it would be perfect to chuck over an outfit on a cooer summer night.

All White, Alright!

Although by now you can probably tell I am more inclined to casual looks, I also really love any opportunity to dress up. Thus, I present a simple yet chic summer date night outfit! I am a fairly petite person, so I was a bit worried this midi dress wouldn’t fit me, but to my pleasant surprise, it fits like a glove. Not to mention it’s a stretch fabric, so it’s so comfortable to wear which is a plus on really hot summer nights. I paired it with these gorgeous grey velvet sandals.

Since I have this dress now, it’s the perfect excuse to force my boyfriend to take me out LOL. That will convince him, right? I am a huge lover of all white looks in the warmer seasons. There is just something so crisp and clean about it. Here are some of my other favorite white dresses:
